Nowruz 2019 Report

The greatest Nowruz celebration in Manitoba was held on Saturday, March 22nd, 2019, at Soul Sanctuary Community Centre in Winnipeg with 400 guests from various cultures and origins.

Mr. Honarbakhsh was the Master of Ceremonies (MC) of the event and announced the schedule. As always, the program began with the Canadian anthem followed by the Ey-Iran (unofficial) anthem. Then, the Nowruz message of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was played followed by the greetings and Noruz Messages of the president of the Board of Directors of the Iranian Community of Manitoba and two special, distinguished guests: Terry Duguid, Member of the Canadian House of Commons and Jon Reyes, the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for St. Norbert.

The next part of our Nowruz celebration was the performance of Avaye Sharghi music group who played live traditional music for the guests in two parts. During the break, students of Persian Language Classes sang some Iranian songs. Next. five members of the community were awarded certificates of appreciation for their contributions to the community and promoting Iranian culture and arts in Winnipeg for several years. These members were: Mr. Afshari, Mr. Asgari, Mr. Birjandian, Mr. Iranpour, and last, but certainly not least, Ms. Shemirani.

Dinner was served after the second part of the Avay Sharghi performance at 08:15 PM. After dinner, Ms. Shooshtari made a brief speech to appreciate the Board of Directors and many other individuals’ efforts to organize, plan, and host the event.

The event continued with a performance by Shakila, an Iranian singer who sang two English songs, and a dance performed by the Iranian Dance Group.

The dance floor then opened to guests at 09:15 PM by DJ Mehrdad and at 11:00 PM, tea, coffee, and sweets were served. The event finally came to a close at 12:00 AM.

We, as the Board of the Iranian Community of Manitoba would like to extend our thanks to all attendees for their support of the community as well as our volunteers who dedicated their time and helped hold a very memorable celebration. Without their support, the event would not have been possible. We would also like to give a special thank you to Ms. Diana and Ms. Sahar Sobhani for preparing an amazing Haft-sin table.

Our special thanks to the Ethnocultural Community Support Program for supporting this through their special project grant and to the many businesses that sponsored and supported the event.
