This year our celebration of Nowruz with the arrival of Spring 1394 was successfully held on Friday, March 20th, 2015, at the Royal Banquet of Viscount Gort Ramada Hotel, located at 1670 Portage Avenue in Winnipeg. The Nowruz 1394 celebration marked another outstanding night, enjoyed by over 200 attendees.
The program began with the Canadian anthem followed by the Ey-Iran (unofficial) anthem by the Persian Language School (PLC) students. Then, the Nowruz message of Prime Minister Stephen Harper was played on the screens. Next, a song called “We Are the Children of Iran” was sung by the PLC students. After that, Mr. Terry Duguid, the candidate of the Liberal party came to the stage and addressed the audience with his Nowruz celebration message. After Mr. Duguid’s message, the PLC students came to the stage one final time to sing “Gole Goldoone Man” which translated means “the flowers of my vase”.
Following that, two Iranian artists, Mr. Ali Talebi and Mr. Bijan Birjandian, played on two traditional Iranian instruments: the “santoor” and the “toonbak”, respectively. Using those instruments, they played and sung several traditional Iranian songs and music. Audience participation in this section of the program was beyond our expectation and the guests enjoyed it so much that they begged for an encore. However, due to time restrictions, this was unfortunately not possible. Then after, a short video prepared by two students of the PLC was played on screen.
Finally, dinner was served. The food quality and the presentation were remarkable and complemented the joy and delight of the evening. During dinner, Mrs. Frouzandeh Shemirani played “Daf” and sang some popular traditional Iranian songs.
In the next section of the program, a professional dancer performed a spectacular dance performance and invited the audience to dance with her. Then, the Province’s Nowruz Proclamation signed by Ms. Flor Marcelino, Minister of Multiculturalism and Literacy, was read by Alexandra Champion.
The next section of Nowruz Celebration night was calling up the receiver of Community Service Award. This year, Mrs. Pouran Pasdar was chosen by the Iranian Community of Manitoba to receive this award. Mrs. Pasdar has been volunteering in the PLC since its conception in 2009. Our sincere appreciation goes out to Mrs. Pasdar for being a model citizen and helping our children to learn the Persian language and spending time toward the goals of the Iranian Community of Manitoba.
The addresses ended by presenting the Certificate of Appreciation to the Third Board of Directors of the Iranian Community of Manitoba’s Mrs. Mitra Tirandaz, Mr. Khashayar Kamrouz, and Mr. Hamid Zahidi.
The celebration continued with many Iranian happy songs and music presented by our DJ, Alireza Ahmadzadah. Our special thanks to Mr. Ahmadzadah for setting up the sound and lighting systems and for making the rest of the evening an exceptionally cheerful and exciting one for all to enjoy. He voluntarily accepted this responsibility and spent all day going back and forth to rent the sound system, set it up, and return it. Due to popular demand, we allowed reduced ticket sale to those who wanted to join the celebration after dinner.
Many thanks to Mrs. Shadi Rezadadah and Mrs. Anahita Amininan for their beautiful “haft-seen” table that was displayed in the room and was a point of attraction for all guests.
Our thanks also go out to all of our hard-working volunteers who contributed to the success of this year’s Nowruz celebration as well as all the attendees for their continued support of the Iranian Community of Manitoba.
The 2015 Nowruz celebration was one of the most memorable and outstanding events that the Iranian Community of Manitoba’s third board has arranged over the last year!
